Certisys launches NATRUE: A reference certification for Organic and Natural Cosmetics on an international scale

With growing consumer demand for natural and organic cosmetics that are transparent and respectful of the environment, certification is becoming a crucial issue. In this context, Certisys is proud to offer, worldwide, a new certification for the organic and natural cosmetics – NATRUE – guaranteeing trusted cosmetics manufactured according to strict criteria.

Consumers in search of transparency and security

Nowadays, consumers are increasingly concerned about the composition of their cosmetic products. They are looking for products that are not only safer for their health, but also respectful of the environment and biodiversity.  Worldwide, 54% of cosmetics consumers[1] are already opting for natural or organic cosmetics.  This trend is reflected in a market for organic and natural cosmetics estimated at almost 21 billion USD in 2023[2], growing by 17% since 2018, and which could reach 23.4 billion USD by 2028.

This growing need for transparency reinforces the importance of reliable certifications like NATRUE, a guarantee of quality for companies and a benchmark for consumers.

NATRUE, a unique, internationally recognised label

The NATRUE Label guarantees natural and organic products that meet rigorous criteria not only in terms of natural and organic ingredients (no parabens, silicones, synthetic fragrances or mineral oils) but also in terms of ethics and environment including animal welfare, sustainable sourcing and biodegradability.

Who is this label intended for?

  • • Cosmetics brands
    • Raw materials producers
    • Cosmetics manufacturers
    • Formulators

Main principles of the NATRUE label

  • The use of 100% natural, naturally derived or nature-identical ingredients guaranteed GMO-free.
  • There are two possible levels of certification, depending on the percentage of natural and organic ingredients in the product: natural cosmetics and organic cosmetics.
  • 13 product categories to adapt the requirements of the standard as closely as possible to the different types of formulation.
  • Rule 75%: for a product to carry the NATRUE label, at least 75% of its brand or sub-brand products must be NATRUE certified.
  • Guaranteed independence of the certification process by a NATRUE-approved certifier such as Certisys.

NATURE key figures

  • + 6,400 certified products
  • 270 international brands
  • + 2,900 certified and approved raw materials

NATRUE guarantees total transparency on NATRUE certified products and raw materials through an online database accessible to all free of charge, consumers as well as suppliers and cosmetics manufacturers.

The importance of the Certification: A reliable guarantee for consumers

Certification plays a crucial role in the natural and organic cosmetics sector, where claims of naturalness are frequent but sometimes misleading.

Certification is a clear commitment by brands that choose to adopt strict, verifiable criteria. It involves an independent, in-depth assessment of the production process and ingredients used by an independent accredited certification body such as Certisys. This rigorous assessment means that consumers can buy cosmetics knowing they meet exacting criteria.

Certification is therefore the most binding, comprehensive and reliable way of ensuring transparency. More than seven out of ten consumers therefore prefer to choose natural or organic certified cosmetics rather than non-labelled products due to a higher level of trust (51%), perceived quality (43%) and health benefits (43%).[1]

A certification, such as NATRUE, guarantees that the product complies with strict specifications, covering all stages from the selection of ingredients to the final product thus ensuring consumers of products that meet strict quality and environmental criteria.

The key role of certification bodies: guaranteeing impartiality and trust

Certification bodies (CBs) such as Certisys play a central role in the integrity and credibility of certifications such as NATRUE. As independent third parties, they are responsible for assessing whether or not a product meets strict predefined criteria, ensuring that only brands and products that meet the highest standards are awarded the label.

Independence and impartiality

One of the most important aspects of CBs is their impartiality. Unlike some brands which might be tempted to claim to be ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ without external control, CBs carry out rigorous and objective checks. They are not linked to either manufacturers or distributors, and their independence enables them to guarantee a transparent assessment, free from commercial influence. This means that consumers can have total confidence in the NATRUE label, as it is based on objective verification by a third party who has no financial interest in the success of the product.

Rigorous Audit Process

For a product to be NATRUE certified, CBs carry out an in-depth audit covering all stages of the product’s life cycle. These include:

  • The analysis of ingredients: CBs check that each component complies with NATRUE criteria by verifying their origin, the use of authorised processes, or their inclusion on the restricted list of authorised substances (pigments, minerals and essential preservatives).
  • The production method: Manufacturing practices must comply with strict ecological standards, with responsible management of natural resources and limited environmental impact.
  • The regular checks: Obtaining certification is not the end of the process. CBs continue to carry out periodic audits to ensure that certified products remain compliant over time. This constant monitoring further strengthens the label’s credibility with consumers.

The certification bodies are so the pillar on which the credibility of labels like NATRUE rests. Their work not only ensures total transparency in the production of cosmetics, but also builds lasting trust between brands and consumers

In order to become a NATRUE Approved Certifier, Certisys underwent a rigorous accreditation process by IOAS (International Organic Accreditation Service). IOAS is an organisation that assesses the competence of certification bodies against a defined set of specifications.
